Walk & Talk Therapy
Sitting face-to-face in a therapy office isn't the best fit for everyone. Walk & Talk Therapy offers another option: meeting with your therapist outdoors while walking together.
Available from our Brookline office, Walk & Talk Therapy combines the same individualized, collaborative approach as traditional therapy with the opportunity to move, get outside, and have your session in a less traditional setting.
For some people, walking side-by-side can make conversation feel more natural. For others, gentle movement can provide an outlet for restless energy or make it easier to think and talk without the intensity of sitting across from someone in an office.
Lucy Myers, MA is excited to offer this service starting Fall 2026!
What to expect from Walk & Talk Therapy
We'll meet at our office at in Brookline before heading outside together. We can incorporate a portion of walking into the session or walk for the entire duration, when it makes sense with your treatment goals. Your therapist will follow a planned walking route that allows enough time to comfortably return to the office before your session ends.
Walk & Talk Therapy is still therapy—the biggest difference is simply where it happens. You and your therapist can talk about the same things you would during an office-based session, and your treatment goals and therapeutic approach don't need to change just because you're walking.
And you don't have to keep moving the entire time. We can slow down, stop, sit, or return to the office depending on what feels right that day.

There isn't one therapy environment that works best for everyone. Some people find that being outside and moving side-by-side helps them feel more comfortable and engaged in the therapeutic process.
Walk & Talk Therapy may be a good fit if you:
Feel more comfortable talking while moving or doing something alongside someone
Find sitting still for an entire session difficult or distracting
Enjoy being outdoors and find a change of environment grounding
Feel less pressure when conversation happens side-by-side rather than face-to-face
Want an alternative to traditional office-based therapy
Walking isn't a requirement for good therapy, and it isn't the goal of the session. It's simply another setting in which therapy can happen.

Confidentiality is just as important during Walk & Talk Therapy as it is in a traditional office setting.
We'll choose walking routes that offer a comfortable level of privacy, but because we're meeting outdoors in an urban area, there is always a possibility that we may see or pass other people. We'll talk about these differences before beginning Walk & Talk Therapy so you can make an informed decision about whether you're comfortable with them.
While we're outside, we can pause a conversation, change our route, or adjust what we're discussing if needed to protect your comfort and privacy.
As with all therapy, there are also certain legal and ethical limits to confidentiality. Your therapist will review these with you as part of the intake process.

Having an eating disorder, disordered eating, or body image concerns doesn't automatically mean that Walk & Talk Therapy isn't an option.
We recognize that movement can have very different meanings for different people. If food, exercise, movement, or body image feels complicated for you, you and your therapist will consider together whether walking during therapy feels supportive and appropriate for your individual needs.
We'll be mindful of the role movement plays in your experience and can adjust our approach whenever necessary. That might mean walking at a different pace, taking breaks, shortening the walking portion of a session, meeting in the office instead, or deciding that Walk & Talk Therapy isn't the best fit right now. We will also collaborate with your other treatment team providers to ensure everyone is supportive of the plan.
The goal isn't exercise. The goal is therapy that works well for you.

Boston weather doesn't always cooperate with outdoor plans. We'll ask you to wear clothing and shoes appropriate for the conditions, but comfort and safety come first.
Depending on the weather, you and your therapist may decide to meet inside the office instead or reschedule when appropriate. You won't be expected to walk outside in conditions that feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Walk & Talk Therapy can be an option for both new and existing Sandstone clients when it is clinically appropriate and available with their therapist.
You don't need to know whether you'll like it before trying it. If you're interested, you can talk with your therapist—or let us know during your consultation—and we'll discuss whether Walk & Talk Therapy could be a good fit for you.
Prefer a more traditional setting? We also offer individual therapy in our Brookline office and virtually throughout Massachusetts.
